If you bought a domain name but don’t know what to do next?
do not worry. you are not alone.
Having a domain name means that you are already one step closer to creating a blog or website. Now you need to do a few other things to get your site going.
Here I am going to share a list of the first things you need to do after purchasing a domain name. You can do all this on your own without the help of any professionals.
Before we go ahead, let’s check out the steps you need to take after purchasing your new domain name.
Now let’s start with the first step.
Step 1: Get a web hosting plan
If you have already purchased a web hosting plan with your own domain name, you can skip this step.
Most domain providers like GoDaddy or Namecheap offer web hosting packages. But it is not as good as web hosting companies.
It is best to buy hosting from a reputable web host.
Yes, you can purchase the domain and web hosting separately. Which is a good idea. I have my domain name registered on Namecheap and it is hosted on WPX Hosting.
When it comes to buying a web hosting plan, I recommend you start with a shared hosting plan. It is cheaper and suitable for new sites.
I started my blogging journey with HostGator Shared Hosting. You can do this. Here’s a special promo link to get a whopping 61% off HostGator.
For whatever reason, if you are looking for a HostGator alternative, you can try Bluehost. It is another affordable web hosting provider.
Step 2: Connect the domain name to the web hosting
If you purchased a domain and web hosting from the same company, you can skip this step.
Otherwise, you need to point your domain name to the hosting server to connect to each other. It’s very easy to do.
Simply log into your hosting account and copy the name servers. If you are using HostGator shared hosting, just log into your cPanel and you will find your name servers in the right sidebar under General Information.
Then login to your domain provider and edit your name servers. If you are using Namecheap, you can do this by clicking the Manage button and then Editing Nameservers.
Step Three: Install WordPress
To run and maintain your site efficiently, you need to have software installed on your host. This is known as a Content Management System (CMS). It allows you to easily publish, edit and modify your contents.
There is a lot of CMS out there. WordPress is the most popular content management system used by more than 40% of websites in the world. It is also considered the best blogging platform.
With one-click installation, WordPress makes it very easy to create a website/blog. You can install WordPress yourself. All you have to do is follow some simple steps.

Step 4: Install a basic theme and extensions
WordPress comes with a default theme that can be changed.
There are a lot of WordPress templates available. Whether you are going to create a personal blog or an e-commerce site, you will have the WordPress themes available for that.
You can get a free theme from the WordPress template directory or you can purchase a premium theme. If you have some budget, it is better to use a premium theme.
Here are some recommendations for you:
- Astra: It’s the same theme we use here at RoadToBlogging.com. It is a multipurpose theme that can be used on any website.
- GeneratePress: It’s another great WordPress theme that we use on our other blog – WPLleaders.com. It is also a multipurpose topic.
- Elegant Themes: Contains a variety of WordPress themes such as blog, business, e-commerce, magazine, multimedia, portfolio, etc.
Once you have chosen and downloaded the WordPress theme you want, you will need to install it on WordPress.

Now let’s talk about the core WordPress components. Here is a list of essential WordPress plugins for a new site.
- Ultimate Blocks: It is a custom Gutenberg blocks plugin specially designed for bloggers and marketers.
- Rank Math: It is a comprehensive WordPress SEO solution developed by the team at MyThemeShop.
- Snap Social: It is one of the best solution to add social share buttons on your blog.
- Contact Form 7: It is the most popular plugin for contact forms.
- Jetpack: It is a multipurpose WordPress plugin by Automattic.
Step 5: Create an email with your domain name
Isn’t having an email address like email@example.com more professional than firstname.lastname@example.org?
Yes it is. Increases brand name visibility and credibility.
You can set up a free cPanel email address for hosting or you can use Google Apps for $5 per month.
I prefer using Hosting cPanel because it is free and easy to set up.

Step 6: Start Adding Contents to Your Site
The success of your website depends on your content. Once you have the sit-ups up and running, you need to start adding content to your site.
Here are some of the most important pages for your blog or website.
You do not need to add all these pages. Just add the ones that fit your site/blog.
It is good to have a blog even if you are running a website. Blogging is the best way to build content for your website. It will help you to get traffic from search engines.
Seventh step: Submit the site to search engines
When you create a new website/blog, you always want people to find your site easily. The easiest way for people to find your site is through search engines.
To find your site on search engines, you need to create a sitemap and submit it to search engines.
Once your site is indexed by search engines, you will start getting traffic from search engines.
When you are just starting a new blog/site, you cannot expect instant traffic from social media or search engines.
It takes time to build an audience in social media and get traffic from search engines.
However, you can get instant traffic by promoting your site offline. Here are some of the things you can do to drive traffic to your blog/site.
- Put your website URL on your business card.
- Print your website URL on pens, mugs and other goodies and give it away for free.
- Make a custom T-shirt for your blog/website.
- Sponsor an event where you can promote your site.
- If you own a car, put your URL on the side of your car.
You can do many things to promote your site offline. Just be creative!
