When most beginners start thinking about building their online presence, they don’t necessarily know The difference between a blog and a website.
This may confuse them in the short term, wasting some valuable time. That is why in this post, you will discover what a blog is and what a website is, including some examples.
You will understand the difference between the two, which can help you decide which one you want.
Let’s get started.
What is a blog?
A blog is simply a site where you can add posts, new posts will appear on top of old posts, and so on. A post can contain anything from an image to a video or text.
A post usually has a headline that shows people what the post is about, and then they write and use photos or videos to discuss the topic.
They are usually educational in nature, and topics may vary from news to entertainment, etc.
A blog can be used in many ways and for many purposes. You can use it for:
- Earn revenue from advertising and affiliate marketing.
- Create a brand, gain an audience, and then sell products.
- Grow your business with blog posts to raise awareness of your company and show how they can benefit from it.
- Share updates about yourself, your company, or your SaaS software.
- Only for fame or to help others.
- As a journal to record information about your day that can be viewed by other people who don’t mind reading your blog
Here are some examples of blogging:
- Path to Blogging: You are already on this blog now. And you are reading this blog post.
- TechCrunch: The popular tech news blog. Each new story is added to a blog post and then published to appear on the site.
- Pinch Of Yum: A popular blog that shares different recipes.
- We Wore What: A very popular fashion, lifestyle and interior design blog.
what is the location?
Website is a general term used to refer to a site with a group of pages within a single domain that you can access using the Internet.
It could also be a dynamic website that changes as you use it – something like Facebook.
The website can be used in many ways.
- As an e-commerce site.
- As a company on the Internet.
- as a search engine.
- As a social networking site.
- As a video sharing platform and many more.
Here are some examples of websites:
- Amazon: The largest e-commerce site in the world.
- Google: The most used search engine and website.
- Facebook: The most popular social networking site.
- Apple: A website for displaying Apple products.
Differences between a blog and a website
As you may have noticed, a blog can be considered a dynamic website, where you can add content directly without re-editing the home page every time. You just write the post and publish it, and you’re done.
But a website should not necessarily be considered a blog. So we can sayAll blogs are websites, but not all websites are blogs“.
I’m sure you’ve come across a lot of static company pages that show what the company does, and that’s it. Or you may have seen websites that look like bios of their owners.
A website can have a blog with many static pages. A blog can also have a set of static pages like our About page.
Which one is better for you?
Choosing between a blog or a website depends on your needs. If you are a company that just wants to build a website to showcase what you’re doing and don’t mind the hassle of creating new pages, content, etc., then all you need is just a website.
You create it once, update it now and then, and leave it. This could also be great for people who only use the domain name to view their resume and don’t want to create new posts.
But if you want to post new content regularly to share new information (for example, updates in the company), you will need a blog.
If you need to create content to build a brand, answer people’s questions, and have an audience waiting for new updates from you, then you obviously need a blog.
Fortunately for you, you don’t have to go for one thing and ignore the other. It doesn’t mean that you can just have a blog or not have it at all.
Platforms like WordPress enable you to create static pages on your site when you need them. You can also create new static pages with a complete redesign and add them to your host. You can also simply host your blog on a subdomain (like blog.website.com) and leave the main domain for whatever you need, so you don’t screw things up together.
The options are limitless. You just need to decide if you want to have a blog on your site or not. If you don’t need to update the site with new posts regularly, don’t simply start a blog. If you need it for any reason, add it to your website. It’s that simple.
Can you do all this and start a blog on your own?
I get it as you read in this post, you start to think that you have to be very technical and have a lot of knowledge about coding, or that you have to pay an arm and a leg to get your site up and running. This is far from the truth
We are in an era where things are getting easier and easier. Blogging has been around for over 20 years now. Creating a blog has never been easier. (Read: 10 reasons why you should start a blog)
You can get started easily… for free today. You can get your blog up and running in a few minutes. You can use a platform like Blogger or WordPress.com and sign up now, and in a few minutes, your blog will be ready. You can actually create your first post after that.
It’s that simple.
But as we discussed in our previous post about blogging platforms, using the free options is not always the best option. If you are new to this online thing and want to dip your toes to understand the game, then head over to any of the sites mentioned above.
But if you’re blogging for a company or you’re serious about blogging and want to build a brand and monetize it, you really need more control over your website – which these platforms don’t offer – so you can design your site with more flexibility. .
If you have read my story, you may realize how many times I have been banned from different platforms due to TOS issues. This is why I always recommend a self-hosted platform.
The best platform that I use and most of the famous bloggers use is WordPress.Org. Don’t go wrong with the free WordPress.com service.
But to install WordPress, you need a host/server to add your site to and then point the domain name to that site. There are many sites to choose from. You can check out our post on the best cheap options to help you get started.
I recommend to go with BlueHost. It is officially recommended by WordPress.org and offers a free domain name.
They automatically install WordPress for you, which basically means that after you sign up, your blog is ready and you can get started in no time.
You can then add posts, choose a new theme, and add plugins to help you do things without getting bogged down in any line of code etc. You can also add pages on the site away from the blog.
The options are limitless, and it’s really easy to get started
The difference between a blog and a website should be pretty clear by now. You should also have a better understanding of how to determine whether or not you need a blog.
After the decision is made, all that remains is to get started. Having a blog is not as difficult as it used to be. You can get started within a few minutes and get your blog up and running.
So don’t waste time and take action now.
